Alnwick has a good selection of shops, including Boots, Dorothy Perkins, M and Co, WHSmith, etc, as well as a number of banks, building societies and coffee shops.
Look out for the ‘Old Cross’ Inn, which has become famous for its dirty bottles. The story is that the Innkeeper died whilst dressing the window about 150 years ago. His widow refused to let the bottles be disturbed and legend has it that any disturbance would be fatal, so the bottles remain in the window attracting dust and ‘curious’ customers.
If you are keen on books you cannot leave Alnwick without a visit to Barter Books, which is located in the old railway station on the left hand side of the A1068 main road into Alnwick. It is one of the largest second hand bookshops in Britain, and it’s fantastic!! You can buy coffee, sit by an open fire and read to your heart’s content, or just browse through rows and rows of reasonably-priced books, trying to decide what to buy. Open everyday 9am-5pm Tel 01665 604888. |
